Dental Implant Placement
At Nu Smile, our cosmetic dentists offer patients the convenience of having their implants placed and crowned at the same office. Many dentists will refer patients to another office for oral surgery. Our dentists will perform the implant placement, monitor your progress in healing, and then perform the restoration.
Our implant dentist inserts small titanium cylinders into your jawbone. This “root” will allow you to use and clean your dental implants as you would your natural teeth. After placement of your implant, your gums and the bone underneath will need approximately four to six months to heal before we place the final crown for your tooth restoration.
The final step in getting dental implants is receiving the permanent crown that will serve as your tooth over the implanted root. At Nu Smile, we use durable porcelain materials and color them to match your natural teeth. Your restored teeth with blend seamlessly with your natural smile.

What are dental implants?
Dental implants are substitutes for the roots of missing teeth. They act as an anchor for a replacement tooth, crown, or a set of replacement teeth. They are a permanent and durable alternative to dentures. Dental implants allow for natural speech, chewing and cleaning. Dental implants can also improve your smile, since they are custom made to the aesthetic and functional qualities of your mouth.
Can dental implants be done quickly?
The dental implant process is a lengthy one, and will require multiple visits to our office usually over a 3-6 month period of time. The first step requires a CT scan to determine if you have enough bone in your jaw in which to place the implants.
Who is a good candidate for dental implants?
Anyone in reasonably good health, without significant bone loss in their jaw, and who want to replace missing teeth, is an ideal candidate.
What does the dental implant procedure involve?
Once it is determined that you are a good candidate, the procedure is done in two stages. First the gum is prepared for the implants to be placed in the jawbone. The dental implants are then anchored to the jawbone using titanium screws. It takes 3-6 months for the implant anchors to properly fuse to the bone tissue. Once this has completely healed, our doctors will prepare the actual prosthetic “teeth” for fitting. Once these “teeth” have been fitted, your procedure is complete.
Can the titanium screws be rejected?
There is no medical research showing rejection, in any type of surgery, of titanium metal. If a failure should occur in rare cases, it is mechanical in nature and not due to rejection by the body.
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants are integrated with the bone in your jaw, and can last as long as natural teeth if properly cared for.
What about infection and complications?
During your surgery, every attempt is made to maintain a sterile procedure area. This tends to minimize any potential infection. Our doctors will also prescribe appropriate antibiotics as a precautionary measure. To prevent infection in the future, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene.
Will I be able to chew and function normally?
Yes, once your implants have integrated, you will be able to function normally without any unusual sensations. Your chewing ability will depend on the type of prosthesis you have chosen.
Everyone has different budgets and different goals. Call or email us today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kwan or Dr. Hsu to discuss dental implants. They will help you decide which procedure is best for you.
